1980s Toaster Concept | 2008

I was required to design a household product which would have existed during the 1980s. I based my product on themes of Paleo-futurism found in science fiction movies of the 80s. Movies such as Brazil, Back to the Future, Tron and Robocop influenced my product's overall functionality and styling.

I sought new and innovative functions to make basic processes appear foreign and seemingly futuristic. From this came a concept for a toaster which toasts bread horizontally along a sloping track depositing the toasted bread on the opposite end. The coils and timer become visible while the toaster is in use, shining dully behind the plastic exterior, and count down the time until the toast exits the back and is deposited onto a waiting plate, ready to be eaten.
